What is GREEn building?
Green building is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings use resources - energy, water and materials - while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building's lifecycle - design, construction, operation, maintenance and removal.

Green building has significant environmental, economic and social benefits including improved air and water quality, conservation and restoration of natural resources, reduced operating costs, improved occupant productivity and heightened aesthetic qualities.

Components of green building include:
  • Water Efficiency
  • Environmentally Preferable Building Materials and Specifications
  • Waste Reduction
  • Toxics Reduction
  • Indoor Air Quality
  • Smart Growth and Sustainable Development

Green Building in California (CALGreen)

In 2011, the 2010 California Green Building Standards Code (aka CALGreen) went into effect requiring new buildings to reduce water consumption, employ building commissioning to increase building system efficiencies, divert construction waste from landfills, and install low pollutant emitting finish materials.

Guides to the 2013 CALGreen Building Standards Code
These go-to guides assist code officials, designers, plan reviewers, inspectors and contractors in understanding how to apply and enforce the 2013 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen).
Starting January 1, 2014, CALGreen strives to have all new construction be Net-Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) by 2020. A NZEB is a building with zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions annually.

ABC Green Education & Certification‚Äč

We are committed to sustainability and the green building industry and offer severak tools to help support you in your green construction efforts.

Green Building Toolbox Talks
Educate those in the field. ABC's Green Building Toolbox Talks equips field supervisors to present a series of 52 sessions focused on enhancing employees' knowledge and training about green construction practices on the jobsite. Available in English and Spanish.

ABC Green Contractor Certification
Gain distinction as a green industry leader. ABC developed this certification program to illustrate the merit shop construction community's commitment to creating sustainable workplace environments both on and off the jobsite and to recognize members who are leading the way.
